Message:

To HICE Participants

As we get ready to close out another productive year, I wanted to provide a final update for 2022, and share some insight on some exciting things ahead for the organization in 2023:

2022 in Review

Organization Development – as a result of our restructure and rebranding that was announced at the end of 2021, a significant portion of 2022 activities were dedicated to developing the organization related to that and putting the necessary staffing in place to take HICE successfully into the future. This involved creating a dedicated CEO position along with our Administrative Operations Manager, and the addition of a new Administrative Coordinator to support the teams.

Association Partnerships – I would like to give a big thank you to the leadership and staff at America’s Physician Groups (APG), California Association of Health Plans (CAHP) and Integrated Healthcare Association (IHA). In my new role as CEO, I have been able to dedicate the time to better foster these important relationships, and the support of these organizations and the opportunities provided to be at in-person events to promote what HICE brings to the industry has been extremely valuable and is greatly appreciated!

The Health Net / IHA Medi-Cal Encounter Data Improvement Project – this project has been a great success, with the HICE Encounters Standardization Team at the core of that success under the tremendous leadership of Carol Wanke from Sharp Healthcare. The partnership will continue into 2023, and HICE looks forward to working further with IHA on the development of this very important industry initiative.

2022 HICE Annual Conference – this year’s conference was conducted virtually on Wednesday, December 7 and attended by over 350 people. The agenda was jam-packed with important updates for the coming year - there were several presentations given by DHCS speakers related to the CalAIM initiative, along with keynote sessions from the DMHC and CMS and several panel sessions. It was a great success, and those who attended also have access to recordings of each session.

Team Activities – the HICE teams once again did a tremendous amount of great work in 2022! A year-end summary of activities along with the focus for the teams in 2023 will be available on the HICE website later in January. In addition to the long-standing flagship program of shared credentialing audits, there are also delegated entity compliance shared audits and IT systems integrity shared audits taking place under the HICE Compliance Team. If your organization is not participating and would like more information on how to get involved, please reach out to those teams and workgroups directly from the HICE website Leadership page.

Looking Ahead to 2023

2023 Operating Budget Funding Request Letters – as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, HICE relies on annual contributions from health plans, provider organizations and other health care industry entities to support educational and collaborative activities, and our important work cannot continue without this critical funding. These request letters were sent to participating organizations in September, and second request letters will go out in mid-January. We encourage those organizations not currently contributing to strongly consider making a donation, as HICE relies on this funding to continue operations and provide value to the industry.

Future Annual Conferences – in the surveys conducted as part of the 2022 virtual conference, questions were included to get feedback on future conferences and to find out if in-person or virtual is preferred. That data will be compiled and reviewed, and an RFP process will begin soon to determine if it is feasible to go back to an in-person event in 2023. There will be more to come on that as this process continues into the first quarter of 2023.

Website Audit Review Process - A main area of focus for HICE in 2023 will be around compliance review and audit structure to ensure that all of the information on the website is up-to-date and meets the most current regulatory requirements. We are looking at possibly expanding our staff to support those efforts, and in the meantime, we will begin the process of reviewing all HICE website documents following an audit schedule, starting with the health plan-specific letter templates that are currently housed in the website library.

We look forward to a very productive 2023 and continuing the important work being done to bring value to the healthcare industry. We would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season!
